An Introduction by Hermione Granger, Deputy Head

Dear Reader,

As I’m sure you are aware, these last ten years since the Second Wizarding War have been highly transformative for the Ministry of Magic. Since Kingsley Shacklebolt was appointed as Minister of Magic, the amount of good done to improve the Ministry has been tremendous.

One of the major points we sought to improve was to increase transparency between the general wizarding public and the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. With that in mind, on behalf of my department, I am proud to announce that officially, the pro-pure-blood laws in effect during the war have all been repealed. In celebration of this happy event, the Ministry has decided to oversee the construction of the new Museum of Magical Artefacts, right in the heart of Diagon Alley.

As an avid lover of learning, I believe that this new construction will greatly benefit our community. Here, children and adults alike can come to learn about our modern world, and what we have learned through history.

Despite what blood status elitists will have you believe, the wizarding world and muggle world are not so different. That is, throughout history, power-hungry men have always sought to disrupt the balance between light and darkness. In context of the wizarding community, more often than not, these men and women have been dark wizards.

You may be questioning then: what is a dark wizard exactly? By the Ministry’s definition, a Dark wizard is one who tries to breed Dark creatures or, at any point of their life, performs any of the three Unforgivable Curses. The punishment for all Dark wizards is a sentence at Azkaban, and in the latter case, a guaranteed lifetime sentence.

For the purpose of education, this exhibit was created to document Dark Magic as we have seen it throughout history. It is not to get ideas. To repeat any of the following offenses of these Dark wizards of the past will get you imprisoned, killed, or worse, expelled.

* Please note: one of the changes the Ministry has made recently is enforcing careful inspection of all shopfronts. Borgin and Burkes, located in Knockturn Alley, has been temporarily closed. In the meantime, Mr. Borgin and Mr. Burke are generously lending some of their artefacts to support our museum.
